Education for Sustainable Development in protected areas (Greek Initiative): 2008-09

In 2008 MIO-ESCDE/ MEdIES Initiative in close collaboration with the MAB National Committee of Greece, and the University of Athens prepared and issued a Training Material in Greek Language entitled “ESD in Protected Areas” (200 pp). The project was realized with the support of the Greek Ministry of Education and the EU under the EPEAEK II program (Operational Program for Educational and Vocational Training II 2000-2006). A numerous group of formal and non formal education and management experts participated in the endeavour as experts authors and evaluators.

The Training material is addressed to Protected Areas staff and ESD professionals. Especially it targets the staff of the Management Bodies of the Protected Areas (27 MBs exist in Greece) the Heads of the Directorates for EE for primary & secondary level (~ 60 of each level exist in Greece), and all the staff of the Centres of Environmental Education (~50 CEEs exist in Greece). Other than that the material is addressed to NGOs, educational institutions, and the wider educational community.

Actually in June 2008, and as the material was still in Draft form, some 60 people of the target group provided feedback on the material during a training seminar, Alonissos island.

The material was completed in 2009, in 500 copies, while the e-version can be downloaded here (Greek Webpage).

It has been widely disseminated in educational and environmental bodies, while in 2010 it was certified by the Greek Ministry of Education as appropriate for use on the Public Schools of the country. The material has been very well received and commented since.

Since 2008, with support of the UNESCO Office in Venice, this material has been translated into English and adapted to the Mediterranean realities. Particular emphasis was given on MAB BRs, as appropriate open laboratories to implement ESD. This process will eventually lead to the English Publication of the Material. To this end a second workshop followed in 2009 in the Centre of Environmental Education in Lavrion (video clip prepared by participants).
