MEdIES Activities for Rainwater Harvesting in Cyclades, April - May 2009

MIO-ECSDE through MEdIES Secretariat in coopetaion with the Heads of Environmental Education of Primary and Secondary Education of the Prefecture of Cyclades and the local authorities organised a series of educational activities in the islands of Naxos (28 April), Syros (7 May) and Tinos (8 May). The scope of the project was the promotion of the new MEdIES educational material in Greek entitled “The Gift of Rain”. The project included pilot activities in schools targeted to students aged 11-16 years old as well as seminars for teachers and educators in the islands. MEdIES activities organized in cooperation with GWP-Med and with the support of the corporate social responsibility programme “Mission Water”.

The educational material “The gift of rain” (produced in Greek) aims at the awareness raising of students (11-16 years) to deal with the traditional and modern techniques and practices of rainwater collection, and to develop their skills for the sustainable use of water. The material could be a flexible tool for teachers and educators in the framework of Environmental Education (EE) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) when working on related issues. The production of the material belongs to a wider pilot programme implemented by GWP-Med and MIO-ECSDE including infrastructures and in particular, development of new rainwater cisterns (water reservoirs) and repair of older ones, at public buildings (i.e. town halls, schools) in the islands of Naxos, Syros and Tinos, with the support of the corporate social responsibility programme “Mission Water”. The material is available in the 'Publications' of the medies website in Greek.

MEdIES activities in schools coordinated by the IAdIES Secretariat, involved Primary and Secondary school students in the three islands. The activities lasted approx. one hour (each time) and touched upon topics such as: the distribution of water and the water circle, the consumption and uses of water, the systems of rainwater collection and the cisterns, the rainwater harvesting practices and other practices for saving water, through games, presentations and selected activities of the educational material. Totally, 203 students participated in the educational activities (112 primary school students and 91 secondary school students).

The seminars for teachers and educators organized in cooperation with the Heads of Environmental Education of the Prefecture of Cyclades and the local authorities of the islands. The seminar in Naxos was hosted in the hall of the Municipal Council of Naxos granted by the Vice-Mayor Mr. G.Sergis.
