WATER SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT OF WATER RESOURCES

23 – 26 November 2006
Athens, Hellas
EXHIBITION CENTER HELEXPO PALACE

In the framework of the 2nd International Conference AQUA 2006 entitled “Water Science and Technology & Integrated Management of Water Resources”, a Special Session that was devoted to¬† “Water in Environmental Education and Education for Sustainable Development” took place on 24 November 2006,

The Special Session was organized by MIO-ECSDE and MEdIES Secretariat and it was under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs. The objectives of the event were:
- To explore the issues, topics and methods related to water in EE and ESD through the concrete projects of schools and Centres of Environmental Education.
- To underline the critical role of education as in awareness raising and promotion of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM)
- To provide the opportunity to students and educators to participate in an international meeting, to communicate with scientists, politicians and other stakeholders working in water management, facilitating by this way, the opening-up of school to society.

Some 60 educators and 40 students participated in the event from various prefectures of Greece. The innovation of the Special Session was that students themselves gave an overview of their water projects through various ways, either using theatrical means and techniques –the case of Anavryta Pilot High School- or by lively presentations. Other schools' projects were presented by the responsible teachers. Furthermore, Centres of Environmental Education presented their educational programmes on water topics and a students? conference on water actions was presented as well.
A public dialogue between educators, university professors, NGO and public authority?s representatives followed on possibilities for closer cooperation among the educational community, the Environmental Education Centres Municipalities and other stakeholders in public awareness raising issues with focus on water. All participants showed great interest in the dialogue during which the need for creation of public, local centers for EE/ESD or enforcement of the existing ones with the cooperation of all local stakeholders was particularly stressed.

Finf below the Agenda of the Special Session, abstracts and presentations in English and Greek language.
