TEMA was founded in 1992 by Hayrettin Karaca and Nihat Gökyigit, two prominent Turkish businessmen. The chief aim of the foundation is to raise public consciousness over several environmental issues posing great dangers for Turkey˘s future. Land erosion, deforestation, the fall of productivity in farm lands, and threats to the biodiversity of the land are the chief issues TEMA founders have chosen for their focus. TEMA develops and carries out model projects in rural development, rangeland rehabilitation, and reforestation. However, education of the public on these matters remains the major focus of TEMA.
TEMA currently has more than 177,000 members and 555 volunteer representatives throughout the country. TEMA organization is getting widespread not only in national but also in international level. Accordingly, in 1998 TEMA-D (Germany) and in 2002 TEMA-NL (Holland) were established. TEMA Foundations abroad work closely with governmental organizations but they go to court for their incorrect actions on environmental issues together with the other NGOs.

TEMA believes that a strong education policy and program is vital in creating a conscientious public, aware of the serious environmental and economic threats posed by soil erosion and deforestation, and keen to address and change the situation. The program is centered around making optimum use of existing educational tools and resources, focusing on teacher training, curriculum, student field trips and adult education; TEMA˘s Education Department actively collaborates with several organizations and agencies like the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Justice, Army Forces and Directorate of Religious Affairs on joint projects and various educational activities like nature and erosion summer training camps, seminars – panels, conferences, radio – TV programs. The number of people who attended TEMA`s various education programs is around 1.5 million.

TEMA is also the publisher of a series of books on a wide range of environmental issues. As the Turkish publisher of the Worldwatch Institute, an award-winning, non-profit research organization based in Washington D.C., TEMA translates and publishes the Institute\'s flagship annual "State of the World" as well as other publications in its "Environmental Alert" series. To date (January 2003), including the children\'s section, TEMA has published 52 books.
