Green Steps for Environmental Literacy is a young and voluntary organization established in 1998 by a group of educators and professionals working in the Non Governmental Organisations working on environmental issues. The mission of GSEL is integrating environmental education to various aspects of our life.

In 1998 the Ford Conservation Award was given to “Time for Environment” cartoon exhibition project realised by Green Steps. The project consists of 40 cartoons on various environmental themes with a brief explanatory statements based on facts and figures compiled with Green Steps.

Between 1999 and 2002, Green Steps carried out a solid waste management project (capacity building) at Princess Islands of Istanbul. The project was financed by METAP, small grants programme. Green Steps worked with municipality, governor and with the schools of the Princess Islands.

In September 2001, Green Steps joined the “Environmental Education Project” (EEP) committee gathered by Ministry of Environment, Ministry of National Education, Istanbul Office of Forest Management, and several NGOs. The aim is to involve the volunteer students of all the primary and secondary schools in Istanbul to examine, to warn and to follow up the causes of pollution in their districts. Green Steps suggested some side activities including a guide (prepared by GSEL) that consists of a monthly plan for several activities in the schools. The booklet will be disseminated to 2574 schools in Istanbul in Jan.2003.

In collaboration with MIO-ECSDE, Green Steps carries out a special education project on “Water in the Mediterranean” and prepares an “Art of Waste” exhibition in Istanbul.

Green Steps has been developing education projects with other NGOs in Turkey.

Environmental Education Publications
Green Steps has published 4 books and many materials on environmental issues (posters, brochures, etc.). The resource centre of GSEL with an approx. 900 books and periodicals is open to the general usage.
