DENIZTEMIZ/TURMEPA, the Turkish Marine Environment Protection Association was founded in 1994 by Rahmi M. Koç and a group of businessmen from the maritime and industrial sector with the aim of preventing marine pollution by nurturing and instilling an increased environmental consciousness by means of education, information and publicity.
In 1995, the Inaugural Declaration of Voluntary Commitment, ˇTo Save the Seas˘ consisting of guidelines to raise public awareness and principle measures to protect the seas, was signed and ratified by international organizations such as UNEP, IMO, The Club of Rome, ICS and IUCN.

Marine cleaning activities
In Istanbul, marine cleaning activities are carried out with our marine Sea Sweeper boat in Istanbul and May through October in Antalya, Gocek-Dalaman and the Bodrum area.
Volunteer university students from around the country and at times foreign students attend our summer camps where they assist the association with its beach cleanups in Antalya, Gocek-Dalaman and Bodrum.
TURMEPA is coordinating the ICC (International coastal cleanup) in Turkey in 2002 and will continue to be the coordinator of this campaign in Turkey. The mission of the ICC is to remove debris from shorelines, waterways, and beaches of the world˘s lakes, rivers, seas and oceans; to collect and catalogue valuable information on the amount of sources of debris, to educate the public on the issues of marine pollution.

Educational activities and programs
In order to assist teachers in teaching their students about marine environmental issues, a number of seminars are arranged in Istanbul and Izmir.
Every year, two appointed teachers from the association, give conferences on marine pollution to elementary and high schools. In these short conferences, students learn about the importance of marine protection, the ecosystem and the rich bio-diversity and are given brochures and booklets about the subject.

Alipot and his Eco-Detectives is a project adopted from Norway with the aim to teach and develop understanding for the coexistence of nature and marine pollution to schoolchildren through magazines, brochures and film. The heroes of the story are marine animals who come ashore to seek children˘s help by teaching them why it˘s important to protect the sea and the environment.

Media and Publicity: Campaigns and publicity films are passed on the media in order to inform the public about our work and activities.

Urgent Blue: 0800 261 18 38 is a free phone line which receives calls with complaints or problems relating to the sea.
