Background & scope

Sustainable schools, are, among others, models of social inclusion and well-being. They promote community cohesion by providing an inclusive, welcoming atmosphere that values everyone's participation and contributions -irrespective of background, culture, age, religion or ability- and by challenging prejudice and injustice in all its forms. Inclusion is therefore a prerequisite for the "software" ( = day to day operation)  of any sustaibable education institution.

In this project, our ultimate vision, is more inclusive, more respectful to one another communities, both inside and outside schools. To do this, the project aims to support educators, animators and trainers from both the formal and the non-formal system in designing and applying inclusive education practices for diverse groups, with emphasis on disadvantaged learners (refugees, poor, marginalised, excluded etc.).

The project step-by-step

In December 2018, we were notified being of being granted a support through PP of UNESCO.

In January 2019, following an open call from the Leader, the joining Partners from Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine were identified and a group of experts of formal and non formal educators was formed in all countries, in order to co-develop and pilot interventions, tailored to the national needs.

In some countries, like Greece, focus group discussions where held in the beginning of the project, to discuss the specific needs of teachers, as regards inclusion education.

In May 2019 the experts peer learning seminar took place in Athens. Read more about it here. During the 2.5 day training, where ~25 participants took place, we had the opportunity to meet each other, present the situation and challenges in our countries, and exhange good practices. We left this meeting more informed and more inspired by one another to keep working in inclusion methodologies.

During the summer - automn period the partners in the 4 countries set out to develop and pilot our interventions, tailored to our needs. After our pilots, all material (designed, games, hands-on, etc) will be compiled in the form of a methodology guidebook for educators (in English language).

- EVENTS IN GREECE: In Athens, a teachers' seminar is planned to take place on 30/10/2019. This wll be followed by targeted school interventions in three primary schools of Athens (Nov, and early Dec), where we will try some drama techniques to explore topics of inclusion-exclusion and, then support the classes to createtheir own "Inclusion Action Plan" to follow during the next year.






The timeline of activities :

November 2019: Finalisation of material based on the evaluation of the interventions. Compilation in the form of a methodology guidebook (in English).

December 2019: Summative evaluation, closing, reporting.

The national interventions:

GREECE: A small team has been set up (Jan 2019) and two focus groups took place (Feb 2019). The team is currently developing educational material (in line with the principles and methds of inclusive education and whole school approach) that will be piloted in selected schools in Automn of 2019. JORDAN: LHAP will use sport as a mean to improve community inclusion, cohesion and educate targeted sport communities in the North of Jordan about sustainability in a way to minimize the sport events footprints. It will organize one big event comprised of sport competitions including footballs, basket balls, volleyballs, traditional games, chess, tennis table, running and nature exploration and walking in which to include Syrians, Iraqis, and Egyptians. The tournament will take place in a natural park that will accommodate all the activities in one day in the reserve of Bergish (North West of Jordan in Irbid govern-orate). LEBANON: The activities target aproximately 30 mothers of Lebanese and refugee background (Syrian Iraqi, possibly also Palestinians, Somalis, Ethiopians) and a total of 15 of their children. Two types of activities will be designed for them: 1. One day learning trip at the Green Demonstration Room, a specialist center for the dissemination of the green building culture. 2. Two environmental craft workshops on the following topics: a. loom weaving b. decoupage. Making such crafts can both help protect the environment and generate some income using available raw materials free of charge (mostly household waste) or easy to purchase. With the proper training and enhancement of creativity, there is a chance to start an income generating activity at minimum cost. It is an opportunity, especially for women, to explore skills and talents, and to improve their sense of self-efficacy and self-esteem. The workshops will be combined with an awareness session on waste sorting, the 3Rs and upcycling. To know more about the events in Lebanon contact Sallama Naamani s.namani[at]makhzoumifoundation.org

PALESTINE: The Qattan Foundation will  hold an experimental multidisciplinary classroom training workshop with 20 participating teachers (from 11 nearby villages) in Ni’leen Teachers Center. The workshop will take place over 3 days (18 hours), mixing between cinema, story and drama.
