Water for the City - Educational Component

"Water for the City" is a two year programme (2016-2018) implemented in Alexandroupolis, Greece by the Global Water Partnership - Mediterranean (GWP-Med) in cooperation with  the local Municipality, the local Water & Sewage Service (DEYAA), and MIO-ECSDE / MEdIES, specifically for its educational component.

The programme aims to enhance the city water supply through increasing the capacity of the city's reservoir and promote good practices for sustainable water use in the urban environment, through the education of pupils and teachers, informing citizens and engaging local Operators. The Mediterranean Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development Information Office (MIO-ECSDE) through the MEdIES educational network coordinates the educational actions of the program.

MEdIES' Activities within the "Water for the City" Programme

MEdIES is in charge of the following educational activities within the two year long Programme:

(1) The development of a new web-based educational material "neroupoli" (= water-city in Greek language) including topics related to the natural vs the urban water cycle, climate change, water management at the city level, responsible consumption etc. 
Neroupoli is an interactive website, designed to be used directly by players aged 10-13 years old and it can be played on PCs, laptops and tablets.

The material is launched with 14 educational activities, with the goal to increase them as the programme evolves. Each activity includes some basic information on the topic, online quizzes and games and tasks for indoor or outdoor discovery.

The website became fully operational in November 2017: http://water-polis.gr/

Note that , for the time being at least, the site operates only in Greek Language.

(2) The production of a sensitisation poster for students, handed to them during our visits in schools. The poster presents components of the natural and the urban water cycle, aspects of integrated urban water management and some tips for responsible water use/behaviour. The poster (in Greek language) is available for download here.

(3) The production of a new set of hands-on material about "Water for the city" (customised magnetic board, illustrated diagrammes, cards, etc.) to be used during the school visits.

(4) The capacity buildings of local teachers. Within the "Water for the City" Program three teacher-trainings have been held: in April 2017 (launching),  in October 2017 and April 2018 (closing), reaching out to about 100 teachers. Another 280 teachers have followed the program with their classes and benefited from it through the school interventions.

(4) The organization of the school interventions in Alexandroupolis for 2017-2018 is expected to have a total outreach to 4,000 students. The MEdIES staff started these inetrventions in April 2017, followed by targeted activities for students and teachers by a local educator, Ms Matina Vezirzti, for the period May-June 2017 and in the next school year October 2017 - March 2018. Matina has actually visited all the schools of the region (23 primary schools, 2 minority schools and 8 Highschools). The "Water for the  City" has reached out to a total 4059 students from all the schools of the municipality.

On April 2018 the closing meeting of the MEdIES Educational Activities in Alexandroupoli took place, in cooperation with the ESD Officers of the Primary and Secondary Educational Directory of Evros. The meeting aimed to present the activities that have taken place (2017-2018)  in all the schools of Alexandroupolis (primary and early secondary schools); to discuss the extent to which the WfC Programme supported the teachers’ work in ESD projects and activities focusing on water and possible follow up activities.


Early in 2019 a post-project development emerged: the local Natural History Museum expressed the interest to “host” the WfC material and activities with visiting students, with the cooperation of the Municipality of Alexandroupolis, the Water Service Company, and the ESD officers of the Ministry of Education. Between March-April 2019 around 1600 students from kindergarten and primary level were engaged in the WfC hands-on activities during their visit in the Museum.  Such progress proves that the local community embraced and valued this educational project.
