The UNECE (UN Economic Commission for Europe) Strategy on ESD is considered as the region’s input and contribution to the UN Decade on ESD. The Strategy that was adopted at the High Level meeting of Environment and Education (Lithuania, March 2005) addresses all types of education: formal, non-formal and informal and covers all levels of education: primary, secondary, higher, vocational and adult. The Intergovernmental Conference "Tbilisi+35" has proved to be unprecedented in bringing together more than 60 Ministers and Vice-Ministers and other high-level delegates from 104 countries to commemorate the 1977 Tbilisi Declaration and 35 years of global educational efforts towards a sustainable world. Over 300 participants of the Conference also included high-ranking officials of intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations and key experts in the field of Environmental Education and Education for Sustainable Development. The Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development took place aiming to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development, to assess the progress to date and the remaining gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major summits on sustainable development, and to address new and emerging challenges. The Conference focused on two main themes: (a) a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication; (b) the institutional framework for sustainable development.

In 2009 UNECE established the Expert Group on Competences in ESD with the mandate to prepare: (a)General recommendations for policymakers, so as to provide them with a tool to integrate ESD into relevant policy documents across all sectors of education, formal and non formal. (b) A range of core competences in ESD for educators, including definitions and guidelines on how to develo these. The outcomes of the discussions and negotiations which took place over a period of 18 months can be found here.

The International Conference "Education as a driver for the Sustainable Development Goals, 11-13/01/2016, in Ahmadabad, India, addressed the role of Education in amplifying actions for implementing the 17 SDGs and produced this Plan of Action providing an overview of the meeting's outcomes.

The informal meeting of the European Union Education Ministers in Paris, on 17/03/2015 produced the Declaration on "Promoting citizenship and the common values of freedom, tolerance and non-discrimination through education". With this Declaration the EU Ministers reaffirm their determination to stand shoulder to shoulder in support of fundamental values that lie at the heart of the EU:respect for human dignity, freedom (including freedom of expression), democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights, common to the Member States in a European society in which pluralism, non-discrimination, tolerance, justice, solidarity and equality between women and men prevail.

UNESCO together with UNICEF, the World Bank, UNFPA, UNDP, UN Women and UNHCR organized the World Education Forum 2015 in Incheon, Republic of Korea, on 19–22/05/2015, hosted by the Republic of Korea, during which 1,600 participants from 160 countries, including over 120 Ministers, heads and members of delegations, heads of agencies and officials of multilateral and bilateral organizations, and representatives of civil society, the teaching profession, youth and the private sector, adopted the Incheon Declaration for Education 2030, which sets out a new vision for education for the next fifteen years.

The Nagoya Declaration on Education for Sustainable Development was produced during the World Conference on ESD in Nagoya, Japan (November 2014) that marked the end of the UN Decade on ESD and Launched the Global Action Programme on ESD (2015-2019) as well as the Final Report of the Decade (more at http://www.unesco.org/new/en/unesco-world-conference-on-esd-2014/about-the-conference)

During the CoP 21 of the UNFCCC in December 2015 in Paris, where 195 governments agreed to take action and reduce temperatures to 1.5Β°C, the negotiations succeeded where twenty previous conferences had failed and united governments for a low-carbon future for the first time with an intent to submit 5 yearly nationally determined climate plans. The critical role of Education in Climate Change was given special attention in Paris. ESD and climate change education were included in the first article approved by country members and were afforded an entire thematic day as part of the conference.
