Educational activities of the RWH project

in the Dodecanese Islands (Kos, Astypalaia) – May 2015

SUMMARY REPORT

We are very happy to have collaborated for the 7th year with the Mission Water Campaign and GWP-med to implement a series of educational activities in schools of Greek Islands and Athens. This year’s activities took place in two Dodecanese islands, Kos (5-8 May 2015) and Astypalaia (19-20 May 2015).

As in previous years, our educational intervention targets mainly late primary and early high school (8-13 yrs) students, aiming to inform and sensitize them on the issue of water saving, particularly through the revival of the traditional practice of rainwater harvesting in cisterns. The educational activities are experiential and discovery-based. At the end of the intervention the educational poster “I care for water” is disseminated to students. A few days later, in the small island of Astypalaia our target group included also younger students (ages 6-8).

One teacher training was organised in Kos, during which the teachers shared ideas on how to use the educational material “the Gift of Rain” in their classes. This material was handed out to them.

In total, 642 students and 67 teachers have participated in the 2015 activities in the Dodecanese islands.

Another special feature of this year was the display of the students artistic Exhibition of “the Gift of Rain” that had run in 2013-2014. The works that included drawings, poster and videos were displayed in the Municipality of Kos for 3 days and visited by hundreds of students from the nearby schools.

All educational interventions were carried out in cooperation with the Dpts. of Environmental Education (EE) of Primary and Secondary Education of the Dodecanese.

Besides that, since 2014, a plethora of educational interventions for students and teachers are carried out in Athens. It is estimated that during the school year 2014-2015, in total more than 2000 students from Athens Metropolitan Area have participated to the “Gift of Rain Activities” and more than 300 teachers have been trained in seminars.
