The gift of Rain

Educational activities of the RWH project

in the Dodecanese Islands (Patmos, Leros, Leipsoi) - 2014

SUMMARY REPORT

This was the 6th year that the MEdIES secretariat has successfully worked with the Mission Water Campaign and GWP-med to implement a series of educational activities in schools of Greece. The 2014 activities took place in the Dodecanese islands, specifically in Patmos, Leipsoi and Leros between 7 and 11 April.

Our educational intervention targets mainly late primary and early high school (8-13 yrs) students, aiming to inform and sensitize on the issue of water saving, particularly through the revival of the traditional practice of rainwater harvesting in cisterns. The educational activities are experiential and discovery-based. At the end of the intervention the educational poster “I care for water” is disseminated to students. This year there was participation also from younger students (ages 6-8).

Two teacher trainings were also organised in Patmos and Leros islands. During the training the teachers were informed on how to use in their classes the educational material “the Gift of Rain” that was handed out to them.

In total, 459 students and 71 teachers from the dodecanese islands have participated in the 2014 activities.

The educational interventions were carried out in cooperation with the Dpts. of Environmental Education (EE) of Primary and Secondary Education of the Dodecanese.

Furthermore, a plethora of educational activities on Rainwater Harvesting have been organised this year, such as the School Competition the GIFT of RAIN, the educational interventions in promary schools of Athens, and the participation in the massive 1st Athens Science Festival (30 April - 1st May) with than 5000 visitors, as well as the sucessful Tritsis Park Festival (7-9 May) in which aproximately 1000 children of primary level took part.
