MEdIES was happy to facilitate a successful Training on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) that was organized by the EU-funded SWIM-Horizon 2020 Support Mechanism, on 13-14 September 2017, in Amman, Jordan.

The Training aimed to raise awareness and contribute to building the capacity of educators and other professionals on the design and application of ESD programmes. It focused on showcasing how educational projects about the use of non-conventional water resources and sustainable solid waste management (recycling, limiting plastic bags, marine litter) can be designed and applied.

More than 55 formal and non-formal educators took part including primary and secondary school teachers, University professors, staff of relevant Ministries (Environment, Water and Education) as well as Civil Society Organizations, the Jordanian UNESCO National Commission.

The training introduced the Mediterranean Strategy on Education for Sustainable Development (MSESD) and explored how its recently adopted Action Plan could be effectively applied in Jordan. The entire training combined presentations, group-work and experience sharing, while the participants were provided with educational materials and other ESD resources so as to enhance their competences on how to design and deliver ESD. The Training will help the trainees in using sound ESD methodologies and in integrating the sustainability culture in their institutions (in management, synergies with the local society, teaching content, and infrastructure).

Many participants declared that the most valuable thing they learned were the pillars of the Sustainable Institution, while they values also the methods used, and knowing about the ESD programmes in Jordan, compared to the whole world. They valued mostly the interactive sessions (workshops and group work) while several of them declared they would transfer the new knowledge and skills on their institution. There was a joint recommendation to form a kind of platform or database for all ESD projects in Jordan, as well as a pledge to host more capacity building trainings.

Aspects that can be improved in future trainings concern the use of less jargon terms and acronyms the better linking between theory and practice, a greater emphasis on teaching methods, and having more clear criteria on selecting the participants (practitioners vs administrators).
