The Programme “Water for the city” coordinated by GWP-Med is taking place in Alexandroupoli, Greece is in cooperation with the Municipality and the Municipal Service for Water Supply and Sanitation for Alexandroupoli. The programme aims to enhance the city water supply (by a technical work for increasing the capacity of the city’s water reservoir) and to promote sustainable water management at city level, through awareness raising of students and teachers, as well as of local stakeholders and citizens.
MEdIES is in charge of the educational (ESD) activities (2017-2018) that include:
(1) The development of a new, online educational material about “Water in the city” and the production of a poster for students;
(2) The production of a new set of hands-on activities about “Water in the city” to be applied during the school visits;
(3)The organization of the school visits in Alexandroupolis for the periods of April – June 2017 and September 2017-June 2018 engaging approx. 4,000 students;
(4) The capacity building of the local teachers (approx. 400 teachers).
To this end, MEdIES initiated the cooperation with the ESD Officers of Primary and Secondary Educational Directory of Evros in order to co-organise: (a) The first round of the school visits (to reach ~ 600 students in the first week of April) (b) the first seminar for teachers (scheduled for April 3, 2017).

In the framework of the Programme "Water for the City", the MEdIES Secretariat has travelled to Alexandroupolis, Greece, for a week (3-7 April 2017) and visited 7 primary and seconday schools, to carry out a series of targeted school interventions engaging 543 students in awareness raising about "water in the city".

On Monday, 3 April, a seminar for educators has been also organised to inform them about the new, online, educational material of MEdIES, so-called "neroupoli" dedicated to water topics in urban environment, focusing on the city of Alexandroupoli. The participants were informed about neroupoli and the related hands-on activities in schools by the MEdIES Secretariat (Iro Alampei, Vicky Malotidi and Vasilis Psallidas). Additionally they were introduced in the overall Programme "Water for the city" by Ms Nassia Kassela, Programme Officer, GWP-Med and in water topics of particular importance for the city of Alexandroupolis, by Mr Christos Kakalis (Municipal Service for Water Supply and Sanitation for Alexandroupoli, DEYAA). The seminar as well as the school visits were coorganised with the ESD Officers of Primary and Secondary Educational Directory of Evros . Totally 53 teachers of primary and secondary schools were trained (during the seminar and the school visits).
