The Contest is organized in the framework of the Project titled “Lebanese Youth as Messengers for Sustainability. Initiative to promote a culture of sustainability among the Lebanese children and young, their families and the local communities.” (Contract code: ENPI/2013/333-178).The Project falls under “AFKAR III”, the Program supported by the EU and managed by the Ministry of State for Administrative Reform (OMSAR) which is engaged with the civil society organizations, in consolidating respect for human rights and socio economic development.

The Project is implemented by an international partnership composed of non-governmental organizations, namely  Makhzoumi Foundation, ALMEE (Lebanese NGO), Armadilla (Italian NGO) and MIO-ECSDE (Greek NGO). The Project has a countrywide dimension, as being developed in three different regions, namely Greater Beirut Area, Baalbek and Tripoli. The Project fosters a culture of sustainability among the Lebanese children and young, their families and the local communities, in order to enhance a sustainable development in the country and sustainable relationships in the Mediterranean region.

Objective of the Contest

In this framework, a Contest on “PROMOTION OF SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION” addressing students of intermediate levels (7-8-9 learning grades) is organized to encourage children and young to become more active and responsible citizens, able to promote change towards sustainable development in their communities.

This activity proposes to enhance a practical and direct understanding of youth on the issues related to sustainable development. Through participating to the Contest, they will have the opportunity to deal with common matters that concern their life and boost their disposition to become socially active and to espouse a good cause. They will be able to express their ideas and exchanging them with those of the others, and then propose concrete solutions that can change and improve the quality of life in their society and throughout the world. They will so practice with the values of citizenship and civic engagement that would result in increasing awareness of their role and responsibilities inside the communities.

Guidelines of the Contest

The Contest is open to public and private schools in the three target areas – Greater Beirut Area, Tripoli, Baalbek – addressing students of the intermediate levels.

The youth will be asked to form groups and together prepare and film amateur sketches on sustainable consumption and production, which should have a duration of maximum 7 minutes.

The participating groups will be supported with adequate materials on ESD including the video produced by Makhzoumi and titled “Youth…the ultimate player in sustainable production and consumption” that will suggest ideas and examples on initiatives for sustainable consumption and production.

Informative meetings will be also held for the schools that will express interest to participate to the Contest.

A Jury will be composed to evaluate the sketches and declare three winners, the best one in each target region. The three winner groups will be provided with all needed stuff and technical support to perform and film professionally the sketches.

The winners will be proclaimed during an award ceremony. The prize, represented by an amount of 1.000 euro, will be used by the winners to realize “their sustainable development action” in their communities, in collaboration with the Municipalities and other local stakeholders.

Furthermore, the three winner sketches will be combined in a documentary/short movie. It will represent a very useful educational tool to be distributed, in the schools and among the local associations working with young. It will be also disseminated, at large through classical and new social media, in order to reach as more audience as possible. Indeed, it will be broadcasted on national TV and radio and published on social media, to be shared not only at national but also at Mediterranean level.
