1. MEdIES Visibility & Events

a Last phase of Youth X change in the Mediterranean

Following a series of launching events in 5 of the six countries (Jordan, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon and Morocco) the project is entering its last phase.

LAST LAUNCHING IN SYRIA: The last launching event that was planned to take place in Syria in April 2011 was cancelled, due to the current circumstances in the country. In order not to permanently call off the event a team of Syrian trainers visited Athens and were “trained” by the YXC experts. This one day training took place on 24 June 2011. The last event in Syria is scheduled to take place at July 26th in the Arab Culture Centre, in Lattakia.

FOLLOW UP TRAINING, LEBANON: The Lebanese partner to the project, Machzoumi Foundation together with the UNESCO regional office and UNESCO National Commission of Lebanon responding to the high demand for repetition of the training in their country decided to repeat the YXC activity in Beirut. The training was actually part of a 3 day long event (28-30 April) with the following agenda:

28 April: Training on the UNESCO KIT “Teaching and Learning for a Sustainable Future”
29 April: Training on Youth X Change in the Mediterranean
30 April: Tree plantation at the outskirts of Beirut.

The YOUTH X CHANGE in the Mediterranean project is led by MIO-ECSDE/MEdIES Secretariat, and co-funded by the Anna Lindh Foundation (ALF), EC/DG Env (MIO-ECSDE core funding), and CP/RAC (through UNEP/DTIE)

b. Three-day Environmental Awareness fest in Attic Park 11, 12 and May 13, 2011

For three days the Hellenic Ministry of Education, educational and local authorities, together with environmental NGIS joined forces to raise awareness amongst school children of primary level on issues of environmental protection. Meeting point was the Antonis Tritsis Park, which was visited by more than 1000 school children that played kinetic games, exchanged views, joined in roll plays and simulations, tried out experiments ... and most of all enjoyed the life of the park.

MIO-ECSDE / MEdIES was there, in charge for the water related activities.

c. The educational activities of the rainwater harvesting project

MEdIES, in collaboration with GWP-med, and under the Water Mission campaign designed and implemented a series of educational activities in schools of 6 Cyclades islands in May-June 2011, namely in Serifos, Sifnos, Milos, Syros, Folegandros and Sikinos.

It was the third year of  application of this project. The purpose of the intervention was to inform and sensitize students to the issue of water saving, particularly through the revival of the practice of collecting rainwater in cisterns. It was primarily targeted for primary level, but this year it was piloted for the first time at younger (kindergarten) as well as older students (16yrs).

A series of teacher trainings also took place also in the islands, during which the trainees were informed on how to use in their classes the educational material “the Gift of Rain” as well as a new water saving poster (see 2.a).

In total 588 students and 109 teachers participated in this yearsΆ activities.

For 2011 activities read more at http://www.medies.net/articles.asp?cID=8&aID=545

d. MEdIES at Mere en Fete, May 2011

The 18th “Mer en Fête” event was organized by U-Marinu on a boat travelling between Marseille and Corsica with stops to Bastia and Ajaccio. More than 5.000 kindergarten and primary school students attended the 3day event (between 8 and 13 May 2011). Our young friends had the opportunity to explore the “Mare Nostrum” through more than 60 workshops where the 130 animators succeeded to give the children a better insight of their Mediterranean eco-cultural heritage and learn them how to protect the treasures of nature. This yearΆs participation rate demonstrates the popularity of this original event.

The 13th Med'Educ took place this year on 11 May 2011 in the conference hall of Danielle Casanova boat, in Marseille. Environment teachers, NGOs, academia, researchers attended the workshops on Mediterranean culture and environment. A workshop was dedicated to the U-Marinu campaign for the implementation of the Agenda 21 at schools in the Mediterranean within an eco-cultural context.

Ms Varvara Vasilaki, MEdIES and MIO-ECSDE representative, attended both events and discussed possibilities of supporting U-MarinuΆs campaign through the MEdIES online network.

2. MEDIES Publications & ICTs

a. New poster on water saving for the Cyclades islands

In the framework of the Rainwater Harvesting project a new poster has been prepared to sensitise students, especially the younger ones on water saving, particularly through the Cisterns, a century old tradition that was abandoned but currently it is gradually revitalised.

The poster is available to download in Greek language at

http://www.medies.net/_uploaded_files/rain_water_harvest/mio_rwh_poster_final_high.pdf

b. RUCAS project: Preparation of Toolkit on methods of ESD in higher education

MEdIES together with the University of Athens are the Greek Partners in the recently launched TEMPUS PROJECT, lead by the Dept. of Primary Education of the University of Crete. The project entitled Reorient University Curricula to Address Sustainability (RUCAS) was launched in October 2010 and has a 3-yr duration. Main goal of RUCAS is to support the development of ESD in the Higher Education sector in Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon. Other partner institutions to the project come from Ireland, Sweden, Italy, and France.

Currently the leader undertakes the statistical analysis of the survey on undergraduate students having taken place in January-February 2011 and its results are expected shortly. Also an analysis of how SD and ESD is included in the curricula of all partner universities is in place.

In this period MEdIES prepares a toolkit describing the effective methods of ESD in higher education.

c. The new MEdIES webpage is launched

The network has been silent during the last period, mainly due to the “lifting” of the page that took quite longer than foreseen. Hopefully, with the launch of the new webpage, our bulletin is about to get a “lift” also.

Take a look at www.medies.net

3. Other News

a. Successful outcome of the proposal on Marine Litter, lead by Provincia di Teramo

MIO-ECSDE/ MEdIES participated as a Partner to a CSA-SA Proposal for the project entitled MARine Litter in Europe Seas: Social AwarenesS and CO-Responsibility (MARLISCO). The main objective of the MARLISCO project is to increase the awareness of the consequences of societal behaviour in relation to waste production and management on marine socio-ecological systems, to promote co-responsibility among the different actors, to define a more sustainable collective vision. The proposal engages 19 Partners from 15 countries.

The project has a 3 year long duration with a starting date at the beginning of 2012.

MEdIES activities and role will be in the awareness sector of the project and include compilation of educational material and organization of trainings.

b. HYDRIA chosen as an outstanding example linking ESD and Culture

This is one more UNESCO in the framework of the Decade on ESD. The project website offers an opportunity for policy-makers and practitioners to learn more about the relationships between ESD, cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue. It showcases a wide range of projects, from across the globe, which are rich in detail and innovative in terms of how they have integrated culture components in ESD.

The website of HYDRIA was chosen as an outstanding example of work bridging ESD and Cultural practices. HYDRIA uses water as a ΅vehicleΆ to unfold the diverse, yet common, tangible and intangible Mediterranean cultural heritage, through reviving some representative ancient water management visions, concepts and techniques of the distant and more recent past. It presents its selected cases through texts, photos and animations and is fully functional in English and Arabic.
