1. MEdIES Visibility & Events

a. Launching of “YouthXchange in the Mediterranean” 9-10 October 2010, Cairo, Egypt

The Launching events of the YXC kit in Egypt were organised on 9-10 October 2010 in Cairo, with a great participation and interest from the Egyptian educational community on the issue consumption.

One day Training event: Saturday 9 October 2010

This event was addressed to all those involved with education and youth issues in the formal or non-formal way, such as teacher of primary and secondary level, youth leaders, university students, staff of museums and NGOs carrying out educational projects etc. About 80 participants representing these categories attended the event, coming from all parts of the country. This variety of their backgrounds enriched the quality of discussions during the workshop, and was considered, overall as an aster to the training seminar.

The evaluation outcomes done through a questionnaire showed a 84.4 % degree of satisfaction of the overall training seminar while the participants made specific recommendations for its improvement. These are taken into consideration from the organizers for the future events in the subsequent countries.

Launching event in Egypt: Sunday 10 October 2010

This event was addressed, primarily, to the relevant ministries of Education and Environment, to local authorities, CSOs & NGOs, and the media. The aprox. 30-40 participants were very interested in the initiative, and actively participated in the discussion that followed by giving examples from their personal experience, in the field of youth work. The event was filmed by the International Nile TV and reportage on it was made on the news.

b. Environment and Culture 2010: Myriads of Water Voices, 14 October 2010, MIO-ECSDE premises

MEdIES was involved in the campaign ENVIRONMENT & CULTURE 2010 undertaken by the Greek Ministry of Culture with an educational activity entitled "A water pot from the Mediterranean”

MEdIES designed and implemented an educational especially “fitted” for the MIO-ECSDE premises in Plaka, where an exhibition of water pots and other ceramic vessels is on display.

The 90-mimnute duration programme was given to a 4th Grade class of Primary students.

The ultimate goal of the programme was to use pottery as a vehicle that would bring students in contact with the culture of the ancient Greek world and to discover that Greek art was influenced other neighboring, pre-existing cultures. Pottery is an excellent means to approach this ambitious goal since it can be used in an experiential way: Students can touch it, carry it, put water in it, they can even break it, as only replicas of little economic value were used.

c. Meeting for GREEK ESD Educators “Education for Human Rights“ in the framework of the Thematic Year 2010-11 of the UN DESD, 19 October 2010, Athens, Greece

MEdIES Secretariat and its Greek Pedagogical Team organised a one day long meeting entitled "Education for Human Rights", on 19 October 2010 at the premises of MIO-ECSDE. This meeting has been organised since 2006 within the context of the UN Decade for ESD, 2005-2014, with a different focus theme each year (themes set by the Greek Ministry for Education). This year the ESD thematic year is devoted to Education for Human Rights, (.

The target audience of the meeting included all those responsible of "special" or "targeted" forms of education, existing in Greece that can be unified under the umbrella of ESD. That means heads of Environmental Education, Health Education and Cultural Affairs, both for Primary and Secondary level, in Attica region, as well as staff of Centers for Environmental Education (CEE) of Attica. The meeting aimed to provide an opportunity for participants to learn and discuss the approach to human rights under ESD.

Overall, aprox. 80 educators and trainers participated, a number much higher than anticipated. This fact shows that there is a great interest in the Greek Educational Community on the subject of Human Rights. On closing a CD-Rom was handed to all participants with rich selected bibliography, high quality educational materials, contact-lists of relevant bodies, and some selected activities from the Greek Pedagogic Team.

In this respect the Greek pedagogical team of MEdIES also organises a series of Movie Shows on the subject of Human Rights for Reflection and Discussion by the educational Community. During automn 2010, three shows are planned, to take place in a multi-function-cafe in the centre of Athens.

d. 4th AQUA Conference: 22-23 October 2010, Paiania, Attica, Greece

AQUA 2010 was co-organized by MIO-ECSDE/MEdIES Secretariat, GWP-Med and the University of Athens on 22-23 October 2010, in Paiania region of Attica, parallel to the LEADEREXPO international exhibitions: Envirotech ΄10 (on Water and Environment Technologies) and Photovoltaic ΅10 (on Energy Technologies).

AQUA 2010 entailed two special sessions: The first session (Friday, 22 October) organised by GWP-med, focused on the "Alternative water resources in the Mediterranean". The second special session (Saturday, 23 October) organised by MEdIES Secretariat, had a strong educational component focusing on the issue of Water through the prism of human rights.

In total, more than 100 participants attended the two special sessions of AQUA.

e. Series of Movie shows followed by discussion to be used in class, on Human Rights

One more activity was organised by the Greek pedagogical team of MEdIES with respect to the DESD thematic year on Human Rights. The idea was for ESD interested educators to gather, watch a relevant film and have a reflection discussion on how this film could be used in the class. The discussion was coordinated with the help of a person coming either form the film industry (director or actor) or coming from the area of protection of human rights (Civil Society, International organisations etc). During autumn 2010, three Movie shows took place on a monthly basis, which were hosted in a multi-function-cafe in Athens downtown.

The discussions that followed were valued by the participants as interesting and inspiring, as they gave room to teachers for sharing experiences and learning new things form the area of film production. The initiative was valued as rather innovative and meaningful; nevertheless the number of participant teachers was smaller than anticipated. In this respect the MEdIES pedagogic team is considering whether it should repeat the activity in the future giving it a stronger publicity and communication component, in a form of campaign.

f. Final experts meeting for training material on "ESD in MAB BRs and other designated areas", 8-9 November 2010, Athens

10 experts were invited in the MIO-ESCDE premises in Athens to have this 1.5 day long working meeting with the task to finilise the texts of a soon-to-be published training material (handbook) for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

The meeting was orghanised in the framework a joint project of MIO-ECSDE/MEdIES and UNESCO/BRESCE undertaken since 2008 with the ambitious aim of compiling a handbook for the educational staff of MAB BRs etc in the MEDITERRANEAN and the SEE REGION, on how to perform high quality ESD projects and interventions with their target audiences.
