The Launching of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD) in the Mediterranean region was realised in this Conference in Athens. The Conference was organised by the Hellenic Ministry of National Education & Religious Affairs also with the support of the Italian Ministry for Environment & Territory, UNEP/MAP and MIO-ECSDE and under the auspices of Greek Parliament, UNESCO and UNECE. The event was sponsored by a Greek company (OPAP).
It was attended by 240 participants from 26 Mediterranean countries, EU and non-EU, among them representatives of Ministries of Education and Environment, International Organisations, Universities and NGOs, the private sector and many educators.
The Conference offered the ideal opportunity to link the DESD with the two major regional initiatives: the UNECE Strategy of ESD and the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD). More specifically, its main objectives were:
- To provide the opportunity to present the newly adopted UNECE Strategy on ESD and properly link it also with the recently adopted MSSD.
- To present the state-of-the-art of ESD in the national formal educational systems.
- To present formal and non-formal regional and sub-regional initiatives on ESD.
- To raise awareness on various national non-formal and informal initiatives on ESD.
- To raise and assure the political commitment to create the necessary institutional and operational framework in the countries to support the ESD.
- To provide the opportunity to discuss ESD issues of particular importance in the Mediterranean region.
On the second day the participants discussed and unanimously agreed upon the Resolution of the Conference that is calling for the development of a Mediterranean Strategy on ESD.

The 1st South-East Europe Sub-regional Workshop on the Implementation of the UNECE Strategy on ESD took place on the 28th of November, back-to-back with the Conference. The Workshop was organised by the Hellenic Ministry of National Education & Religious Affairs with the support of UNECE and MIO-ECSDE.
