MEdIES meetingsSeminar "Methodologies for the Application of Educational Materials in Education for Environment and Sustainability (EfES)"
    Athens, Greece, 25-26 October 2003

During the last weekend of October, the 2nd seminar in the framework of MEdIES took place in the University of Athens. The seminar was addressed to Greek educators Environmental Education (EE) centres, and NGOs and it aimed mainly at the study and deeper questioning on the educational methodologies applied in various programmes of “Education for Environment and Sustainability” (EfES) in the context of formal, non-fomal, and informal education.

More specific objectives of the seminar:

    • the notification to the Greek educational community of the two newly published educational materials on water and household wastes.
    • the exchange of views and experiences on research, theory and practice of the educational methodologies applied under EfES programmes.
    • the set up of constructive dialogue on the specific methods that are proposed by the new educational materials on water and wastes.

During the 1st Day of the Seminar (25 Oct) the participants were introduced to the MEdIES Type II Initiative, its philosophy, structure and main objectives. MEdIES Webpage www.medies.net was also explored (content, possibilities for interaction, enrollment of members) and the participants showed keen interest to become members.

Additionally, the two educational packages “Water in the Mediterranean” and “Wastes in our life” that were just published (Greek edition) were presented and the participants expressed their interest in obtaining the packages and using them for the programmes they are implementing in their schools during the current academic year.

Finally a number of presentations were made by Professors, Educators, EE Centres Directors, as well as NGOs on a series of issues related to methodology in EfES. The themes of the presentations were the following:

    • the Evolution of Concepts in EfES,
    • Constructivism in EE,
    • EE Student projects in the field coordinated by NGOs (Effects of “small objects” pollution),
    • Sustainability in our daily lives through Recycling,
    • Educators Networks in EE,
    • EE Centres in Greece,
    • Educational Drama in EE.

The 2nd Day of the Seminar (26 Oct) was basically a workshop. During this workshop the participants were divided in 7 groups (according to their choice) that worked on different methodologies, based on educational activities from the two Packages on Water and Wastes, respectively. Each workshop lasted approx. 2 hours and the methodologies that were examined were:

    • Contacting Surveys
    • Educational Drama
    • Field Visit and Field Work
    • The models
    • The experiments
    • The concept maps
    • Conversations & Brainstorming

The seminar was finalized after the presentation of the results of each workshop to the plenary. MIO-ECSDE is going to proceed with the publication of the proceedings of the meeting (Greek edition).
