Seminar "Methodologies for the Application of Educational Materials in Education for Environment and Sustainability (EfES)"
Athens, Greece, 25-26 October 2003
During the last weekend of October, the
2nd seminar in the framework of MEdIES took place in the University of
Athens. The seminar was addressed to Greek educators Environmental Education
(EE) centres, and NGOs and it aimed mainly at the study and deeper questioning
on the educational methodologies applied in various programmes of “Education
for Environment and Sustainability” (EfES) in the context of formal,
non-fomal, and informal education.
More specific objectives of the seminar:
- the notification to the Greek educational community of the two newly
published educational materials on water and household wastes.
- the exchange of views and experiences on research, theory and practice
of the educational methodologies applied under EfES programmes.
- the set up of constructive dialogue on the specific methods that are
proposed by the new educational materials on water and wastes.
During the 1st Day of the Seminar (25 Oct) the participants were introduced
to the MEdIES Type II Initiative, its philosophy, structure and main objectives.
MEdIES Webpage www.medies.net was also explored (content, possibilities
for interaction, enrollment of members) and the participants showed keen
interest to become members.
Additionally, the two educational packages “Water in the Mediterranean” and “Wastes in our life” that were just published (Greek edition)
were presented and the participants expressed their interest in obtaining
the packages and using them for the programmes they are implementing in
their schools during the current academic year.
Finally a number of presentations were made by Professors, Educators,
EE Centres Directors, as well as NGOs on a series of issues related to
methodology in EfES. The themes of the presentations were the following:
- the Evolution of Concepts in EfES,
- Constructivism in EE,
- EE Student projects in the field coordinated by NGOs (Effects of “small
objects” pollution),
- Sustainability in our daily lives through Recycling,
- Educators Networks in EE,
- EE Centres in Greece,
- Educational Drama in EE.
The 2nd Day of the Seminar (26 Oct) was basically a workshop. During
this workshop the participants were divided in 7 groups (according to
their choice) that worked on different methodologies, based on educational
activities from the two Packages on Water and Wastes, respectively. Each
workshop lasted approx. 2 hours and the methodologies that were examined
were:
- Contacting Surveys
- Educational Drama
- Field Visit and Field Work
- The models
- The experiments
- The concept maps
- Conversations & Brainstorming
The seminar was finalized after the presentation of the results of each
workshop to the plenary. MIO-ECSDE is going to proceed with the publication
of the proceedings of the meeting (Greek edition).
